If Facebook Feed Pro displays an "Error validating access token" message, the Facebook access token used to access your Facebook Page is no longer valid.

Facebook Feed Pro uses an access token provided during the Facebook Connection process to request Page data from the Facebook API. If Facebook no longer accepts that token, the extension cannot retrieve new data until the Facebook connection is restored.

Why Can a Facebook Access Token Become Invalid?

A previously working Facebook access token can become invalid for several reasons. For example:

  • The Facebook account password was changed.
  • The Facebook account session was invalidated for security reasons.
  • The user's access to the Facebook Page or Page permissions were changed.
  • Facebook changed or invalidated the authorization session or access token.
  • The access token was revoked.

In these cases, Facebook Feed Pro may receive an error from the Facebook API such as:

Error validating access token: The session has been invalidated because the user changed their password or Facebook has changed the session for security reasons.

The exact Facebook error message may vary depending on why the access token became invalid.

How to Fix the Error

If the widget uses a direct Facebook connection, reconnect Facebook to obtain a valid access token.

  1. Open the affected Facebook Feed Pro widget in Joomla Administrator.
  2. Connect to Facebook again and complete the Facebook authorization process.
  3. Select the Facebook Page you want the widget to use.
  4. Save the widget.
Important: Don't forget to save the widget after restoring the Facebook connection.

After a valid Facebook connection has been established, Facebook Feed Pro can use the new access token to retrieve Page data again.

Managing Access with Token Manager

If you use Facebook Feed Pro in multiple widgets, reconnecting each widget individually can be inconvenient when a Facebook access token becomes invalid.

Token Manager allows Facebook Page access to be managed centrally. The same Page access can then be used by multiple Facebook Feed Pro widgets instead of maintaining a separate Facebook connection in each widget.

If the Facebook authorization needs to be renewed, you can update it through Token Manager instead of reconnecting every widget that uses that Page individually.

Disconnect Button in Older Facebook Feed Pro Versions

In Facebook Feed Pro versions prior to 4.6.0, clicking the Disconnect button in a connected widget revoked the current Facebook access token.

As a result, other widgets using that access token could also lose their Facebook connection and display an access token validation error.

This behavior was changed in Facebook Feed Pro 4.6.0. In current versions, disconnecting a widget no longer revokes the Facebook access token.

If you are using an older version of Facebook Feed Pro, we recommend updating to the latest version.

Still Getting an Access Token Error?

If reconnecting Facebook or renewing the authorization in Token Manager does not resolve the problem, check that the Facebook account still has access to the Page you are trying to display and that the required Page permissions were granted during Facebook authorization.
